How to Use a Snake to Clear a Drain

drain snakeWe all know how annoying clogged drains can be. Armed with the right tool, however, you have the ability to clear most of them.Plumbing snakes, also known as augers, can be found in most hardware stores, and they are useful for dealing with tough drain blockages. Comprised of a long, flexible, wound metal cable, plumbing snakes are able to quickly work their way to and through your drain clog. The steps for using a plumbing snake are as follows:

  • Put on a pair of rubber gloves.
  • Turn the auger’s handle clockwise to snake the metal cable into the drain. Your grip may require adjustment during this step.
  • When you feel the plumbing snake has met the clog, turn the handle clockwise some more and pull back. Do this a few times to dislodge the blockage.
  • Keep trying to remove the blockage by pushing the snake forward. Eventually, the snake should push through the clog.
  • Pull the snake back through and out of the drain. Have a bucket and some towels or old rags available to deal with the mess.
  • If your efforts were unsuccessful, your clog may be located deeper in your drain system. You can try performing the same steps as above but placing the plumbing snake through the branch cleanout (the T-fitting along the drainpipe). Shut off your water supply before doing this, and have a bucket ready to collect water.
